You know, we are a step behind in this country. Most of the people who use the whole 'I have [minority] friends' people are so obviously against them that they only expect other discriminatory folks to believe them. As in, the folks who say 'I have gay friends' don't expect any gay person to believe they do, it's just used to convince the homophobe and other homophobes around them that they aren't hateful people. I mean, this happens... and maybe it's just me being in the midwest.
I've always felt that if you have to back your argument with I'm not sexist/racist/homophobic with- I have a gender/race/sexuality friend- you should take a step back and think a bit because you are probably a sexist/racist/homophobe.
